Abstract (en)

[origin: WO9942477A2] The invention relates to a nucleic acid molecule from a sugar transporter family. Said nucleic acid codes for a protein with the biological activity of a transporter for saccharide-coupled medicaments. The invention also relates to vectors containing these nucleic acid molecules. In a preferred form, these vectors are suitable for the expression of the transporter in prokaryotes or eukaryotes and for gene therapy. The invention also relates to proteins which are coded by the nucleic acid and to antibodies which specifically recognise these proteins. The objects of the invention can be used to test cells, especially tumour cells, for the presence of a transporter of this kind. In the event that said transporter is not present in cells, it can be introduced by gene therapy. In this way, tumour cells can be made accessible to chemotherapy much more effectively than previously possible.
