[origin: DE19807251A1] A device for converting data sequences from the FR format to the ATM format and vice-versa has an FR communication module (PIM) for connecting to an FR communication link, an ATM communication module for connecting to an ATM communication link, a central computer (FP) for controlling the FR and ATM communication modules and a buffer memory (PSSM) connected over an internal communication link with the central computer (FP), the FR and the ATM communication modules. The communication data to be converted from the FR to the ATM format and vice-versa are temporarily stored in the buffer memory (PSSM) and the operation of the central computer (FP) is not interrupted by the data write/read processes into/out of the buffer memory. The converter thus achieves an increased transmission capacity.
