[origin: DE19860472A1] The invention relates to a method for the continuous hardening and tempering of steel strips. According to this method, for hardening the strip material is heated to a hardening temperature and then quenched and for tempering said material is exposed to a tempering temperature. To obtain virtually constant hardening in a steel strip whose thickness varies along its length, the strip material is heated during tempering in such a way that it does not reach the tempering temperature until shortly before leaving the tempering zone. As a result the duration of exposure to the tempering temperature has no effect on the strip material's final hardness, which is instead determined exclusively by the tempering temperature.
