[origin: DE19808331A1] The inventive device has an electrode with apparent porosity. An electrolyte of a fuel cell adjoins one side of the electrode, whilst the other side is adjoined by a plurality of supply (1) and discharge (2) channels for the fuel cell operating medium. A supply channel is a channel into which unused operating medium is guided before being guided on to an adjacent active area. A discharge channel is a channel into which operating medium which has been used on the active surface is guided before being guided out of the fuel cell. A channel into which both fresh and used operating medium is guided is not a supply or discharge channel within the meaning of the claim. Each discharge channel (2) is adjoined by a supply channel (1). The operating media flow perpendicularly in relation to the active surface. This results in an improved supply of the operating media to the active surface of a fuel cell, which in turn increases the output of the fuel cell.
