[origin: WO9919089A1] A piercing mill, in which a drive device employed in a conventional piercing mill is reconsidered in concept and improved with resepect to equipment arrangement. Specifically, a piercing mill for a seamless steel pipe comprising a pair of piercing rolls (1, 1) disposed in opposite to each other about a pass line which moves in a direction of rolling of a pipe stock (3), plugs arranged along the pass line so as to be disposed between the piercing rolls, and drive devices (4) for transmitting a drive torque to the piercing rolls, wherein, the drive devices (4) each comprises a rotating shaft (5), a reduction gear (6) and a main motor (7), which is disposed closer to the piercing roll than the reduction gear (6) and juxtaposed with a rotating shaft (5). Also, it is desired, in the mill, that a drive device be provided on an outgoing side of the piercing mill. In the piercing mill, since a space occupied by the drive device can be reduced, the equipment arrangement can be made compact and further neighboring equipment can be arranged near the mill when continuous arrangement of the equipment is required, so that the entire layout can be made optimum.
