[origin: EP1061685A2] The method involves multiplexing data channels (1) for transmission and demultiplexing after transmission. The data of an individual channel are distributed among at least two wavelength channels (14). The data of each channel may be distributed among each possible wavelength of the wavelength multiplex (7). The data may be augmented with redundant information prior to transfer to the wavelength channels. The redundant information may be in a form suitable for forward error correction. Those channels which are identified in the receiver as being of poor quality may be excluded from the multiplex. Independent claims are included for a data transmission method and two wavelength-division-multiplex transmission systems.
