[origin: DE19810812A1] The optical transmission element (OE1) has at least one optical waveguide (LW) which has a given polarisation mode dispersion. To reduce this polarisation mode dispersion, of the respective waveguide along its length, interference means (CL1) are statistically distributed. The interference means cause externally directed additional polarisation mode couplings for transmitted light inside the optical waveguide. The interference means are formed by additional material coatings on the respective waveguides. Coloured markings may be provided as the material coating.
