[origin: DE19929309C1] The assembly to package a roll of newsprint, wraps it with a packaging web (20) in a width which is less than the length of the roll. The wrapping web (20) is brought to one end (12) of the wound paper roll, at right angles to its longitudinal axis, until the first straight coil is wound. When the first straight coil is in place, a lateral cut is made and then at an acute angle, together with a relative axial movement between the paper roll and the wrapping web (20), to give spiral wound coils (30) of wrapping between the ends (12,14) of the roll. On reaching the second end of the roll, a second lateral cut is made for the wrapping web (20) movement to be realigned at right angles to the roller axis, for a final straight winding (24) round the roll.
