[origin: WO9945399A1] A tachometer (6) in which incorporated within the engine speed (rpm) range is a plurality of illuminating elements (3, 4, 5). These illuminating elements (3, 4, 5) being arranged to provide different red line warnings of acceptable engine speed (rpm) for said engine dependent upon monitored operation conditions or simply engine/gearbox combination type. The range of acceptable engine speed (rpm) may be varied in accordance with engine load. Alternatively, a single tachometer can be used for a wide range of engines with the red line limit for each respective engine fixed by one of said plurality of illuminating elements. Thus, a single standard or generic tachometer incorporating the plurality of illuminating elements but appropriately adapted by the interrogation means is used for each distinct engine and gearbox combination rather than specific tachometers for each combination.
