[origin: WO9950296A1] The present invention relates to the discovery that a nucleic acid molecule as set forth in SEQ ID NO:1 encodes a polypeptide (SEQ ID NO:2) that mediates the intracellular signal induced by the binding of TGF beta to specific cell surface receptors. In addition, it has been determined that the polypeptide of SEQ ID NO:2 also acts to increase the secretion of TGF beta . Moreover, the polypeptide (SEQ ID NO:4) encoded by the nucleic acid molecule as set forth in SEQ ID NO:3 was determined to modulate the activity of SEQ ID NO:2.
