Abstract (en)

[origin: DE19858810A1] The invention relates to a flat lighting device (1) comprising a light-conducting plate (2) and at least two electrical light sources (3, 4) which can be used to couple light into a light-conducting plate (2). A first light source (3) is adjacent to the light-conducting plate (2) and a second light source (4) is arranged behind the first light source (3), as seen from the light-conducting plate (2), in such a way that the light which is emitted from the second light source (4) during operation can enter at least partially the light-conducting plate (2) by traversing the first light source (3). In dimming operation, the first light source (3) which is closest to the light-conducting plate (2) is switched off and softens the light flux which is to be coupled from the second light source (4) into the light-conducting plate (2). In this way, extreme dimming is possible without the light source changing its electrical or luminous characteristics.
