Abstract (en)

[origin: WO0051453A1] The invention relates to a method for protecting individuals from injury in the event of an accident during which an airbag placed on the body of the individual is deployed according to the results of sensor signals. The acceleration of at least one point on the body of the individual is triaxially determined and evaluated. The path covered after an acceleration commences is monitored and the path of motion is determined. The deployment is initiated if the path of motion deviates from a straight line. The device for protecting individuals from injury in the event of an accident comprises an airbag whose deployment is subject to the results of sensor signals and is characterized in that at least one inflatable airbag chamber is arranged in an undergarment which surrounds the body, such as in a pair of pants or in a shirt. In addition, at least one sensor is provided for carrying out the triaxial determination, and an evaluation circuit is provided in which the path of an accelerated movement is calculated from the sensor signals and is compared to a linear or stored path of motion.
