[origin: WO9956018A1] The invention relates to an axial piston variable displacement machine for converting hydraulic work into mechanical work or vice versa, comprising a plurality of hydraulic cylinders (2) that are rotationally mounted with substantially parallel axes (2a) around a common longitudinal axis, movable pistons (4) that are arranged in the cylinder and connected to a pivoting plate (8), a regulating device enabling the pivoting angle of said plate (8) to be regulated, and a sleeve (19) that does not rotate in relation to the cylinders (2) and is arranged outside the plate (8), whereby means of engagement are provided on the plate (8) and on the sleeve (19) to transmit torque between the plate (8) and the sleeve (19). Greater efficiency is achieved by fitting a toothed gear (23) on the external periphery of the sleeve (19) in order to capture torque from the sleeve (19) or to introduce it into said sleeve.
