[origin: WO9950840A1] A magnetic tape servo pattern with different frequency signals is written on a magnetic tape to define the frame boundary. A significantly different frequency field is used to signal the transition from one frame to the next. Servo stripes (13) are written onto tape (11). A first frequency signal is written on a first area (27) and a second frequency signal is written on a second area (28). The first and second frequency signals are alternately written onto servo stripe in successive frames (14, 15). A third frequency signal is written in a predetermined band pattern in each frame over the second area.
