Abstract (en)

[origin: WO9956468A1] In a communications network having a primary communication path, a bi-directional secondary communication path. The primary communication path delivers downstream signals from a headend to a subscriber location. The secondary communication path transmits return signals from the subscriber location to the headend, and also provides an out-of-band transmission path for downstream signaling. The present invention meets the needs in the art by allowing return signals to be transmitted upstream over the secondary communication path, thereby avoiding the consumption of bandwidth in the primary communication path. Moreover, downstream signals which do not need to be transmitted in the downstream band can be transmitted over the secondary communication path, further reducing the consumption of bandwidth in the primary communication path.
