[origin: WO0048725A1] The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for synthesis and identification of complex metal oxides formed as combinatorial variation by molecular beam epitaxy on a substrate, and to the result of such synthesis, i.e., combinatorial arrays (or libraries) of samples comprised of stable or metastable complex oxides, multilayers, and superlattices. A position-addressable combinatorial library of complex oxides having thermally unstable structures includes a multi-region substrate, and, formed on the substrate regions, thermally stable or metastable oxides having the formulae: (A1)x1(A2)x2...(An)xnOy, where at least one of the elemental components Ai is a metal, xi, y are whole or fractional numbers including zero, n=2-20, and the stoichiometries or structures of the oxides vary systematically and in a known way in at least one elemental component, on progressing between one side region and another in a pair of opposite side regions. Also disclosed is the use of the library in identifying complex oxides with desired properties, e.g., high-temperature superconductivity.
