A monostable ferroelectric active matrix display, containing a liquid crystal layer in the form of a single domain with a clearly defined direction of the layer normal (z) of the smC asterisk phase, the layer normal (z) and the preferred orientation (n) of the nematic or cholesteric phase (N asterisk phase) form an angle of more than 5 deg . Independent claims are also included for the following: (i) production of the above active matrix display; and (ii) an active matrix display produced by the above process.
