[origin: WO9963306A1] The invention relates to a method and apparatus for automated measurement, particularly the use of automated measurement in retailing. As many as 50 % of all measurement-sensitive furnishing orders are inaccurate, mainly due to difficulties in making accurate measurements on site. There is therefore a requirement for reliable measurements in retailing. The invention provides a method of measuring the distance from a point in space to a reference plane, which may be a wall or other feature, in order to measure required dimensions. At least two different views of this scene are required. The scenes are captured and downloaded to a computer where they are processed using the method. The method offers: 1) speedy, unobtrusive and accurate data capture where furnishings are to be installed; 2) a permanent representation of the site and its key measurements; and 3) seamless integration into retailers' related systems such as CAD, stock control, and ordering systems.
