[origin: WO9964966A1] A distributed database system has a plurality of separate nodes each including a data store to hold a duplicate copy of a set of data, the data stores being updated by a process in which a first one of the nodes initiates communication with another one of the nodes, the first and said another node then performing a comparison process to establish whether their stored sets of data are duplicates of each other, and if they are not duplicates to exchange data between them so that their stored sets of data are duplicates of each other, the invention providing that the rate at which the first node initiates communication with other nodes for said comparison process is influenced by the rate of arrival of data updates at the first node, an increase in the rate of arrival of updates tending to increase the frequency with which the first node initiates said comparison process. This rate may be subject to upper and lower thresholds. The system may be one based on a time stamped anti-entropy consistency protocol.
