[origin: WO0056230A2] A power control system maintains the power dissipated by an atherectomy burr during an ablation procedure at or below a predetermined threshold. A power control circuit monitors the speed and torque provided by a prime mover that rotates the ablation burr in order to calculate the power dissipated under no-load conditions. During ablation, the power dissipated is determined and the no-load power is subtracted to calculate the ablation power. The control circuit adjusts the speed of the prime mover to maintain the ablation power at or below the predetermined threshold.
