[origin: WO9966320A2] A method for detecting a defect (48) in a guide rail (1) is disclosed, wherein an ultrasound wave (40) that is injected into the guide rail (1) with a frequency of less than 100 kHz is detected on the opposing inner sides (41, 43) of the rail surface (39) after at least two reflections. The method can be implemented both in reflection and transmission mode. The rail of a railroad, for instance, can be monitored during train operation on the railway to detect defects and rail fractures. Preferred devices for implementing the method are also disclosed. Several devices can be combined to form a monitoring system, with the aid of which long distances covering several hundred kilometers can also be monitored.
