[origin: WO9954322A1] This invention provides a process for the preparation of Baccatin III from a compound of formula (X) which comprises the steps of: (i) protecting the hydroxy group on a compound of Formula (X) at the 7-position or C9, or both C7 and C9 sequentially; (ii) oxidizing the resulting group at the C9 position; (iii) either: (a) sequentially deacylating the esters at positions C13 and C7 or, (b) simultaneously deacylating the esters at positions C13 and C7.
