[origin: DE19821978A1] A fuel cell membrane/electrode unit has electrodes sandwiching a proton conductor comprising a temperature stable electrolyte-saturated non woven micro fiber material. A fuel cell membrane/electrode unit comprises a proton conductor arranged between optionally catalyst coated anode and cathode electrodes, the novelty being that the proton conductor is formed by an electrolyte-saturated non woven micro fiber material which is chemical inert with respect to the electrolyte at up to 200 deg C and under oxidizing and reducing conditions and which has a weight of 20-200 g/m<2>, a thickness of less than 1 mm and a pore volume of 65-92%. Preferred Features: The non woven micro fiber material may be filled with a per fluorinated ionomer, a 1-5 M aqueous sulfuric acid solution, concentrated phosphoric acid or hydrated zirconium phosphate or ammonium dihydrogen phosphate.
