Abstract (en)

A child-resistant compact or tablet case (10) of one-piece molded plastic construction made up of a generally flat rectangular base (12) and a cover top (14) interconnected by an integral "living" hinge (16). Each front edge flange (24,26) has an arcuate recess (28,30), and these recesses are mutually offset from each other laterally of the case (10) when it is closed with the flanges (24,26) lying against one another. The base (12) has a pair of latch spring fingers (36,38) disposed one on each of the laterally opposed sides near the front edge of the base (12) and that protrude upwardly from the base bottom wall (18) in cantilever fashion. The top (56) has a cooperating pair of pockets (40,42) that receive the free latch-tang ends (44) of the spring fingers (36,38) to render them exterior-accessible in the closed condition of the case (10). The outer edges of these pockets (40,42) form the strike portion of the latch system. To open the case (10), squeeze pressure must be applied with one hand simultaneously to both of the spring finger tang ends (44) to move them to unlatched condition, and then to hold them in this condition while, also simultaneously, with the other hand pry-open pressure is applied to the two front lip flanges (24,26) at the aforementioned offset recesses (28,30). This two-handed operation further resists opening by a child because of its complex dual-hand-manipulative coordination requirement. <IMAGE>
