[origin: WO9963149A1] Disclosed is a method for delignifying lignocellulosic materials by first treating the material with an alkaline solution in the presence or absence of anthraquinone, and then exposing the material to a polyoxometalate. Inclusion of the alkaline pretreatment step allows delignification to take place at high efficiency and affords high residue yields and viscosities.
