Abstract (en)

[origin: DE19830303A1] The invention relates to the arrangement of an instrument panel carrier (1) in the body of a motor vehicle (11) comprising opposite A-pillars (10) to which the instrument panel carrier (1) is fixed by its ends as a transverse support at the height of the instrument panel and vehicle parts (see 17) disposed in the central area (4) in front of the instrument panel carrier (1). The invention also relates to a corresponding instrument panel (1). During frontal collision, the vehicle parts (17) are blocked against the instrument panel carrier (1) as a result of energy-absorbing deformations of the front part of the vehicle. Deformation paths for targeted energy-absorbing deformation are thus shortened, undesired delays highly increase and predetermined deformation procedures can be negatively affected. According to the invention, the instrument panel carrier (1) extends on both side areas (2, 3) practically aligned in a rectilinear manner between the A-pillars (10) and is bent towards the back in the passenger compartment in the central area (4). This makes it possible to obtain a larger displacement path for vehicle parts in the central area (4) without reducing the free space and the distance of both front seats in the side areas. In a preferred embodiment, a triangular profile (5) having a wedge-shaped edge pointed towards the front is used as separation and cutting edge in the central area (4).
