[origin: CA2324025A1] In order to develop an apparatus for safeguarding a merchandise item against theft, the apparatus having a safeguarding part for fixing to the merchandise item, a holding part for fixing to an object which is not at risk of theft, and having a connecting cord which connects the safeguarding part to the holding part in a manner such that the apparatus enables an improved presentation of the merchandise item, it is proposed that the apparatus comprises at least one winding part which automatically winds up the connecting cord.
