Abstract (en)

In an apparatus for filling a container (10) with a liquid, there is a supply line (22) for the liquid and a return line (26) for gas displaced from the container (10). A relief valve (50) is positioned to selectively prevent flow in the return line (26), and the pressure at which the relief valve (50) opens can be varied by a control means (40). This allows the back pressure in the container (10) to be varied, and is of particular use when filling a container with a liquid containing dissolved gas, to avoid breakout of the gas. The invention also extends to a method of filling a container, in which a characteristic of the liquid is monitored and the back pressure varied in accordance with this characteristic. <IMAGE>
