Abstract (en)

[origin: WO0065834A1] The present invention teaches a method of copying a media file from a server to a client over a network and playing that file on the client, whereby surplus bandwidth that is not required for playing the media file is used to enhance the copy of the media file on the client. This leads to entirely new browsing functionality, in which the typical browsing actions of (i) viewing a sequence of video frames at a reduced rate (e.g. a slow motion view) or quality (ii) or re-viewing a sequence of video frames or (iii) pausing to view a single video frame, results in the quality of the video frame or sequence of frames being substantially better than at the normal playback rate. This is particularly useful since when a user browses in these ways, he or she is likely to be interested in scrutinising detail.
