Abstract (en)

[origin: FR2780318A1] A composite blade (1) or component has interface coating layers of a crystalline or amorphous 'magnelie' type ceramic phase containing stoichiometric titanium oxide, nitride and/or carbide. A composite blade (1) comprises a backing strip (2) having an interface coating (3) for sliding contact with a moving medium (4), the interface coating (3) having a microscopic lamellar structure of \}15 microns thick coherent individual layers, two or more of which consist mainly of a crystalline or amorphous 'magnelie' type ceramic phase containing one or more sub stoichiometric titanium compounds of formula TiOy (y = 1.8 to less than 2), TiNz (z = 0.5 to less than 1) and/or TiCx (x = 0.5 to less than 1). Independent claims are also included for the following: (i) a component comprising a substrate and an interface coating as described above; and (ii) a process for making the above composite blade by repeated HVOF (high velocity oxy-fuel) spraying of source material, using a sub stoichiometric quantity of oxygen relative to the fuel, onto the cleaned face (2a) of a strip (2) having a dressed edge (3a) to obtain two or more interface coating layers. Preferred Features: The layers also contain a small amount of metallic titanium. Each individual layer is 1-15 (especially 3) microns thick in the active zone of the blade. The lamellar material of the interface coating has a density of \- 4000 (especially 4050-5000) kg/m<3> and the coating has a hardness of \- 700 (especially 1000) HV. The bending flexibility of the blade, expressed as the minimum diameter of a roller on which the blade can be wound without cracking of the coating, is \- 25 (especially 30) cm. The coating may adhere directly onto the strip or may be bonded by an intermediate adhesive layer. The spraying step is repeated 50-300 (especially 200) times.
