[origin: WO0007355A2] A messaging system for transferring messages between any two of a plurality of user machines. The system includes a message manager for overseeing secure message operations. The message manager is associated with a management database which stores separate secure channel properties for each message channel between the manager and each of the user machines. Additionally, per user machine, the device includes a local secure message processor which secures messages. The processor is associated with a local database. The local database stores secure channel properties per channel between the user machine and each other user machine with which the user machine communicates, including the manager.
