Abstract (en)

[origin: DE19919749A1] The invention relates to a brake pedal assembly (4) for motor vehicles, comprising a pedal support (5) which is fixed to the body of the motor vehicle and which accommodates a bearing arrangement (18) for the pivoting shaft (17) of a pivotably mounted actuating pedal (6). Said actuating pedal is provided with a tread (9). An actuating element (7) for a servo brake unit (1) with a brake master cylinder (2) is hinged on the actuating pedal. According to the invention, the pivoting shaft which is mounted on the pedal support is located on the actuating pedal between the tread and the coupling point (8) of the actuating element. This inventive measure guarantees increased occupant protection in the case of an accident, achieved by an automatic pivoting of the actuating pedal out of the area of the lower extremities of the driver of the vehicle. The novel configuration also presents considerable advantages with respect to the installation space and to other components, in particular, to the servo brake unit.
