[origin: DE19834267A1] The invention relates to a device for the electronic verification, release and payment of a transaction to be carried out by means of a transportable data carrier unit. Said device comprises a local data input unit which is designed for the manual input of data by a user and via a data transmission network can be connected with a central verification and transaction unit. The local data input unit is connected with a local output unit which can be activated in response to a release signal. The transportable data carrier unit presents a first, visually legible uncovered character string and a second visually legible character string which can be uncovered after the irreversible removal of a seal. Both character strings are intended to be read by the user and to be manually entered into the data input unit. The local data input unit is configured such that in response to the manual input of the first character string it triggers a verification mode of the verification and transaction unit by means of an on-line connection of the data transmission network, in response to a verification signal of the verification and transaction unit permits the input of the second character string, and in response to the input of the second character string triggers the creation of transaction data in the verification and transaction unit and the generation of a release signal.
