[origin: WO0007350A1] A voice messaging system (6) is controlled by with means (8, 9) arranged to identify the calling party (2), and allocate that party to a defined user group, such that it transmits different stored messages (7), to a calling party according to the user group to which it is allocated. The system may be arranged to connect selected callers to the called party (1), and divert others to the voice messaging system (6). The allocation of calling parties to user groups is under the control of the user (1). The allocations are pre-arranged to vary with time or other factors. Messages can therefore be personalised for different groups of callers, so that messages appropriate to the caller and the called party's current activities can be sent.
