[origin: WO0006284A1] A filter element made to fit within a filter element housing, the filter element comprising an extruded open-cell thermoplastic foam having a stucture substantially of cell walls and cell struts, an overall open-cell content of 50 percent or more, an average cell size of 1.5 millimeters or less, and a permeability coefficient of 6 x 10<-13> m<2> or more, and, optionally, retaining means for the foam, and a method of filtration comprising passing a liquid or gas through the filter element.
