[origin: GB2306917A] A thermal printing device (1,Fig.1) is disclosed which comprises: a first cassette receiving portion (26,Fig.1) for receiving a first tape holding case (2,Fig.1) housing a supply of image receiving tape (54,Fig.1) or direct thermal tape ; a second cassette receiving portion (28,Fig.1) for receiving a second tape holding case (4,Fig.1) housing a supply of image transfer tape (12,Fig.1); wherein the first tape holding case (2,Fig.1) is selectable from a set of tape holding cases including at least one tape holding case (2d,Fig.6) containing a supply of direct thermal tape, the tape holding case (2d,Fig.6) housing direct thermal tape having an extended portion (60,Fig.6) to exclude the possibility of inserting a second tape holding case into the second cassette receiving portion; and wherein the first cassette receiving portion (26,Fig.1) includes means (62,Fig.6) for detecting that a first tape holding case (2d,Fig.6) housing direct thermal tape has been inserted therein.
