[origin: EP1107190A1] The method involves storing postal charges in a franking machine in the form of postal charge units and applying a machine-readable date stamp containing a distinguishable electronic payment to the postal item that is different from that applied to all other postal item representing an individual data record. The data record is used to enable checking for multiple uses of electronic payments and/or date stamps.
