[origin: EP1108971A1] The emergency escape system for a car comprises an explosive device (22) which severs the connection between the car door and the bodywork. A second explosive device (27) exerts a force outwards at right angles to the plane of the closed door after the first device has been detonated. Detonation is controlled by a crash sensor.
