[origin: EP1109178A2] The method involves switching a switching voltage suddenly to a predetermined maximum voltage and performing sudden or timed reduction of the maximum switching voltage to a holding voltage after detecting a load current (11) peak and/or after a predetermined time has elapsed. The holding voltage is lower than the rated load voltage. Independent claims are also included for the following: a circuit for implementing the method and a digital output unit for a speech programmable controller.
