[origin: WO0016570A1] A contactless programmable electrostatic RFID apparatus (101, 102) that is cost-effective, has high manufacturability, and can be easily packaged for a wide range of applications is presented. Under the present invention, following an exciter signal, a data reader/encoder (101) transmits a write mode data sequence to communicate to a transponder (102) whether to enter into write mode. The modulated write mode data sequence further provides instruction, data, and memory address information for the transponder to use in writing data into its memory. Conversely, the transponder interprets the absence of such write mode data sequence to mean that read mode is desired. Accordingly, read mode is the default mode.
