[origin: DE19840482A1] The invention relates to a method and a device for controlling a paper document of value, notably for controlling the state of a bank note, according to which the bank note is subjected to both a dark-field measurement and a bright-field measurement. By comparing the results of the dark-field and the bright-field measurement a definite conclusion can be drawn as to whether a fault such as a hole, tear, etc. is present in the bank note in the area tested. The bright-field and dark-field measurement devices can be configured as separate devices each having an LED array and a detector array. However, preferred embodiments of the invention provide for either a common LED array with two detectors or two LED arrays with a common detector. If two LED arrays are used the dark-field radiation source is preferably configured as an infrared light source and the bright-field radiation source as a red light source to be able to control not only the state of the paper document but also its authenticity.
