Abstract (en)

[origin: EP1112976A1] The optical fibre cooling procedure, using a cooling fluid in at least one cooling zone, consists of a rapid cooling stage, i.e. cooling the initial fibre at a rate faster than the ambient air, followed by a slow cooling stage, in which the fibre is cooled at a slower rate than the ambient air. In the rapid cooling stage the initial temperature of 2000-1500 degrees C for silicon glass fibres, 450 - 250 degrees C for fluoride glass fibres and 250 - 175 degrees C for polymer-based fibres is reduced to 1700-1200, 400-200 and 225-75 degrees C respectively. In the slow cooling zone the above temperatures are reduced to 1500-700, 350-25 and 200-25 degrees C respectively. In each of the cooling zones the temperature profile is arranged so that the outside temperature is as high as possible and the core temperature as low as possible.
