[origin: EP1113102A1] For determining the amount of unbalanced load in the drum of a washing machine and, at the same time the amount of the total load in the drum, the motor drive system is supplied with an auxiliary periodic signal of known frequency, such frequency being different from the frequency corresponding to the target speed of the motor. By analysing the frequency response of the controlled variable (i.e. the speed of the motor) at a frequency corresponding to the target speed and ay a frequency corresponding to the auxiliary signal, it is possible to determine the unbalance load and the total load respectively. <IMAGE>
