[origin: GB2341707A] A smart card 102 comprising electrical contact means, an integrated circuit and interface means including a serial data interface 104 and at least one parallel data 105 interface arranged such that data stored in the integrated circuit may be accessed via the parallel data interface. Preferably each of the interfaces includes a ground connection a, b, more preferably these are connected together. There may be two interface means (301, 302 fig 3a) on different sides and at different ends of the card. A reader for reading the above card is also disclosed, comprising interface means adapted to accept data from the data interfaces. The reader may comprise means to detect whether the card has a pair of connected ground connections, the reader may be arranged to also write data to the card.
