Abstract (en)

[origin: WO0002569A2] The present invention is related to novel ginger-based compositions for the treatment of atherosclerosis and related conditions. Standardized ginger extracts included as components of the proprietary composition, "ROZ20", were tested in-vivo for their effect on reducing atherogenic modifications of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and on reducing or substantially preventing the development of atherosclerosis. The study was performed in apolipoprotein E deficient (Eo) mice. At the end of 10 weeks of consumption of 250 microgram/day, "ROZ20", the entire aorta of the mice were examined for atherosclerotic lesions. The mean lesion area of the ROZ20-treated mice was reduced by 67 % in comparison to the lesion area of placebo-treated mice. These results clearly demonstrate that administration of "ROZ20" for a period of 10 weeks to the atherosclerotic Eo mice has a significant beneficial effect in substantially reducing the size and rate of development of atherosclerotic lesions.
