Apparatus comprises an inhalation branch (7) connected to first and second respiratory gas sources (T1, T2) which are linked pneumatically for at least part of the inhalation phase, a secondary valve (10) and an exhalation valve (11) opened and closed by pneumatic balloons (12, 13) or membranes. It also has a commutation system with two solenoid valves (EV1, EV2) providing a sealed coupling between the first and second gas sources and maintaining a hermetic seal in the inhalation branch at least during the inhalation phase, and an additional branch (17) with gas ducts (1 - 5), the solenoid valves and a pilot controller (16).
