[origin: GB2343371A] Powered furniture, eg a chair or bed, movable by power between configurations, has a safety mechanism which detects the presence of a foreign object in the path of movement and acts on the power control to reverse and/or stop the movement. The furniture item may be mounted on a plinth or base around which is fixed an elongate flexible detector switch 1 having internal contacts (8,9 Fig 2) which meet under pressure. Electronic circuitry 2 detects contact being made and causes the movement to stop, preferably after a reversal of movement. The switch may also be mounted on the moving furniture part.
