[origin: WO0031569A1] A coated optical lens includes a lens element and a stain masking coating on a surface of the lens element. The coating does not substantially vary in colour when stained by contaminants (e.g. body oils) having a refractive index in the range of approximately 1.3 to 1.6. The coating has multiple layers. The thickness and/or number of the layers are selected to reduce the visibility of stains. The coating functions as an anti-reflective or reflective (mirror) coating. Specific coatings may be designed with appropriate coating design software.
