Abstract (en)

[origin: WO0031281A2] The invention relates to DNA sequences of Sorghum bicolor (millet), Flaveria bidentis and Spinacia oleracea (spinach) which contain the coding region of a glutamate/malate translocator. The introduction of said DNA sequences into a plant genome modifies the formation and transmission of carbon skeletons for the fixation of nitrogen and the transmission of the assimilated nitrogen in transgenic plants. The invention also relates to plasmids, yeasts and bacteria containing said DNA sequences and to transgenic plants in which the introduction of said DNA sequences brings about a modified activity of the glutamate/malate translocator and thus elicits modifications in the nitrogen and carbon metabolism. The invention further relates to transgenic plants which are influenced in their ability of photorespiration due to the modified activity of the glutamate/malate translocator. The invention also relates to the use of the sequences of the glutamate/malate translocator described for the identification of related plant translocators (angiosperms, gymnosperms and algae) by low-stringency hybridization or by PCR techniques and to the use of the glutamate/malate translocators as targets for herbicides.
