[origin: EP1138485A2] A device for positive alignment and tensioning of a printing plate on a printing machine with a cylindrical platen, using a plate (1) which has a temporary protective coating. The platen cylinder has a recessed channel (41) containing a plate tensioning arrangement comprising a forward clamp unit (5) and a rear clamping and tension unit (6). The forward clamp has locating, electrical contact, elements (54a,54b) which correspond with locating holes in the plate to assure correct lateral and peripheral registering on the platen. The locating elements have an abrasive surface finish to remove, or penetrate, the protective insulating coating in the region of the locating holes, to provide electrically conductive contacts. The abrasive finish on the locating elements may be provided by coating with carborundum powder or diamond dust composition; the locating elements may be rotatable. An alternative system employs micro-blades projecting approximately 0.05 mm from the ends of the locating elements. Preferably the locating holes are formed as U-shaped stampings in the edge of the printing plates. The completion of an electrical circuit through the plates, which are fed from a magazine, is used to signal the correct mounting, on the platen.
